how is education related to human freedom?
we begin our education very young. education plays a fundamental part in our everyday lives as human beings. without them it would almost be impossible for us to survive and provide. these slaves never had that education and even if they ever escaped or were freed they would not have that same education to survive. Fredrick douglass when he was young bean to educate himself and learn how to read and write. this education led him on his path towards escaping. in someways you can never be truly free without education.

Why is the ability to read and right a statement about freedom?
In some parts in the book it is mentioned that these slaves were treated a property. They were treated and valued the same as horses and sheep. Reading and writing often can mean education, something that the slaves did not have. So when a slave knows how to read and write it shows how he/she broke this enslavement, and are looked at as more than property. They are looked on differently. When Fredrick Douglass was first getting taught to read his teacher was scrutinized. His master said that he would get the idea that he was a free man. This in some cases is true. Knowing how to read and write is rare for these slaves and it can sometimes be viewed as freedom.

What was the reason for the harsh punishment of slaves for minor offenses
Whenever the slaves would do the slightest thing wrong they would get punished.
It dis not matter if the slave was at fault or not. The slave owners did this to scare the other slaves into obeying them. They might also do this because they are just a cruel person who finds enjoyment in that. To think of accidentally doing the slightest thing wrong and being whipped for it is hard to think about. However, after they would punish one slave the rest would most likely behave.

the arrow and the song
by henry wadsworth longfellow
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
rhyming is used excessively throughout this poem in all stanzas. the first two lines of each stanza have almost perfect flow almost mirroring each other. in fact the second line of the first two stanzas actually do. the first two lines in the first and second stanza describe an action and then saying that he/she does not know the result these two lines rhyme in both stanzas. the last two describe why he/she does not know the result of their action action. these rhyme as well. the last stanza is where this pattern breaks. the lines still rhyme but are instead the conclusion of what happened in the first two stanzas, he finds the arrow and the song. after reading the poem a couple times i realized that the last two lines just don't flow as well as the rest of the poem. maybe that's just me. the author uses rhyming to create excellent flow as well as group ideas together.
