what is the importance of telemachus' journey in the odyssey?
very early on in the odyssey we are introduced to telemachus, Athena pushes him to go on a journey to find out what happened to his father. but does telemachus' journey really play a role in the return of his father or the downfall of the suitors? well not really, telemachus' journey is really just a path to "manhood". before he went on this journey he was basically a push over, the suitors had no respect towards him. so when Athena arrived she knew that in order for odysseus to return home and slay the suitors telemachus would have to be prepared. with this new experience telemachus had gained by the time his father returned he was well prepared for what was to come.

In Book 19, why do you think Odysseus is so harsh on Eurycleia after she recognized him?
Why was Odysseus so harsh to Eurycleia when she recognizes him?
Overal I think there is an ultimate goal in Odysseus' mind all throughout the odyssey, to return home to his wife and son as well as slay the suitors. When Eurycleia discovers that he has returned he is scared that his plan may be ruined if Penelope finds out. This fear was what most likely drove him to be so harsh and grab her throat. You would also have to look at the situation, with Penelope so close he did not know what would happen. Oddyseus' anger may not have been justified but in the heat of the moment it seems that is just whaT he was compelled to do. However, This story takes place so long ago that maybe his treatment would not have been unusual.

Find three prices of formulaic language so far. Explains how you feel these would be helpful when singing or speaking the odyssey.
When thinking of the formulaic language I've seen. the three I feel most impact the way you would sing or speak the odyssey would be: owl eyed Athena, God like Odysseus, and posaiden earth shaker.
Owl eyed athen I feel would give an audience a good idea of how wise she is and how she can inipulate characters. God like Odysseus would speak of the feats of Odysseus in his life and how "God like" they were. Posaiden earth shaker I feel best represents his control of the sees and all he can do with that power. He was able to keep Odysseus from escaping his hold with calypso. as well as trying to drown him at sea once he does.

What role has Penelope played in the book so far?
Penelope is telemachuses mother and the wife of Odysseuses wife. It has been some twenty years since he left. Some of the people in Ithaca known as 'the suitors' pursue Penelope thinking that Odysseus is dead. Penelope has not been arranged to marriage yet and it seems as if she does not want to. She has been seen trying to delay and trick the suitors. "Young men-my suitors, since Odysseus is dead- eager as you are to marry me, you must wait until I finish this robe." Later on she is seen unweaving this very same robe in the night after she would weave all day. She was doing this to delay the suitors and stall. With Odysseuses new quest to find answers about his father maybe there is knew hope in Penelope's heart that her husband is still alive.

Throughout my reading of the life of Frederick Douglass what really interested me was unjust in the court system. It was not surprising to me to see that slaves were not given fair treatment under law. The slaves were not treated as people but as property. How could the people in that time treat slaves the same as cows. I believe twice in this book we see examples of this. Very early in the book a slave named dimbe is shot. There was some investigation on the murder, but not to convict his murderer, but to see just why he did it. And again later when Frederick is beaten on the ship yard.

how is education related to human freedom?
we begin our education very young. education plays a fundamental part in our everyday lives as human beings. without them it would almost be impossible for us to survive and provide. these slaves never had that education and even if they ever escaped or were freed they would not have that same education to survive. Fredrick douglass when he was young bean to educate himself and learn how to read and write. this education led him on his path towards escaping. in someways you can never be truly free without education.

Why is the ability to read and right a statement about freedom?
In some parts in the book it is mentioned that these slaves were treated a property. They were treated and valued the same as horses and sheep. Reading and writing often can mean education, something that the slaves did not have. So when a slave knows how to read and write it shows how he/she broke this enslavement, and are looked at as more than property. They are looked on differently. When Fredrick Douglass was first getting taught to read his teacher was scrutinized. His master said that he would get the idea that he was a free man. This in some cases is true. Knowing how to read and write is rare for these slaves and it can sometimes be viewed as freedom.

What was the reason for the harsh punishment of slaves for minor offenses
Whenever the slaves would do the slightest thing wrong they would get punished.
It dis not matter if the slave was at fault or not. The slave owners did this to scare the other slaves into obeying them. They might also do this because they are just a cruel person who finds enjoyment in that. To think of accidentally doing the slightest thing wrong and being whipped for it is hard to think about. However, after they would punish one slave the rest would most likely behave.

the arrow and the song
by henry wadsworth longfellow
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
rhyming is used excessively throughout this poem in all stanzas. the first two lines of each stanza have almost perfect flow almost mirroring each other. in fact the second line of the first two stanzas actually do. the first two lines in the first and second stanza describe an action and then saying that he/she does not know the result these two lines rhyme in both stanzas. the last two describe why he/she does not know the result of their action action. these rhyme as well. the last stanza is where this pattern breaks. the lines still rhyme but are instead the conclusion of what happened in the first two stanzas, he finds the arrow and the song. after reading the poem a couple times i realized that the last two lines just don't flow as well as the rest of the poem. maybe that's just me. the author uses rhyming to create excellent flow as well as group ideas together.

choose one of the poems we have studied and analyze the title.
the young man's song
the title I believe is saying that the poem is a young man's song. almost like saying that a young man in love would say some of the lines he says in the poem. for example in the first line "i am too young" "i am old enough". these might be things a young man in love might say. and later on in the poem "oh love is the crooked thing, there is nobody wise enough to find out all that is in it". all of these things he says are things a young man first discovering love might say. so basically the whole poem is a young man's song.

Enjambment in we real cool,
In we real cool the author uses enjambment in every line break.
I think the author does this to effect the flow of the poem and how it reads.
For example at the end of a line if I'm left with a single word of the next line then I have to read down to the next line in order to complete it. doing this effects the way I read the poem.
The author may use enjambment to surprise the reader with each line.
If this poem did not have eenjambment it would not get the same message across, because at the end of every line you rush to the next to make meaning of what you just read. This can really effect the meaning and tone of a poem.

Out of the Amazon: life on the river
Early on the morning of September twelfth my class group got a tour of the out of the Amazon: life on the river exhibit at the HMNS. This exhibit explored the life culture and lifestyle of 13 different tribes in the Amazon. Some of the tribes had similar believes and lifestyle, including different he
ad dresses and the different roles shaman might have played in that tribe as well as how they made there baskets etc. And each tribe was unique in some aspect.when we were finished with our tour we were asked to go back to a specific part of exhibit that spoke to us and take some field notes and to further explore and research that part of the exhibit and put it in our blog post.
I chose to further explore the role of shamans in tribes. So a shaman is basically the doctor of the tribe. But there are some other roles shamans play in the tribe. I chose to almost compare and contrast two tribes shamans and see what some similarities they share.
(Insert photos).
First I will talk about the Yanamamö. The Yanamamö shaman held the duties of healing any person in the tribe that might be sick or is injured. To do this he would cast spells on them, or blow smoke on there body's to cure some sickness. Most of the time these techniques would include powder of some kind of plant or herb. The Yanamamös cosmos consist of four key layers. the first is empty but used to be occupied by gods, the second is almost an earth but with better food, materials etc. the third is home to the sphirits of the dead, the fourth is the almost underworld, it's where evil sphirits are banished, it is the shamans job to keep these sphirits at bay.
Now I will compare the Yanamamö shamans to the shuar tribe shamans. The shuar tribe have two shamans instead of one. They have one shaman that cast spells and is very gifted in magic, it was said that if he wanted he could make anyone die with an almost sphirits dart. That is also how they would explain people dying of natural causes. The second shaman would be used for healing members of
the tribe. The shuar tribes cosmos consist of three layers, the bottom is almost like the essence of nature, the middle is our earth, here is where all evil sphirits live. It's the shaman that is gifted with sorcery that controls these sphirits. The top is the heavens where God would live.
Both of these tribes are very similar but share different believes and there shamans are very different.
On the right: some tools used by a shaman. On the left: a stool used by a shaman, only a shaman can use a stool.

The difference between the speaker of a poem and the poet
The difference between the speaker of a poem and the poet.
The speaker of the poem is the point of view of a person/thing that the poem centers around.
The poet is the writer/author of the poem. Sometimes the speaker is very similar to the poet, but you can't always assume that when reading a poem. Confusing the speaker and the poet will most of the time be a complete disaster. For example if a poet named John Hughes wrote a poem about his marriage from his marriage from his wives perspective, and you assumed it is from his perspective then you would have trouble really understanding the poem. When going into a poem you should never assume who or what the speaker is.
